EMPYRIA
"The Long Road Home" CD
Label: Independent
Release Date: 2009
Genre: Progressive Metal
Country: Canada

Empyria from Canada is a progressive metal band already founded in 1991. Until today they have released three demos, an EP and four albums. They have a quite unique sound. They have straight songs with some strange breaks, some acoustic guitars, keyboards and varied vocals. Their music is obviously influenced by Fates Warning, Queensryche, Crimson Glory, Rush, Enchant, Tiles and some others. The vocals sometimes remind me on Nevermore/Sanctuary. They have an epic structure like Metal Church. As you can see, there are a lot of great influences here. But the music is unique by all those influences. Empyria don´t copy all those bands above mentioned. So here you get a really interesting progressive metal album which is not worse compared to more famous bands. Check them out!

Genre: Black Metal

Edge Of Night is an experimental atmospheric black metal band from Austria founded in 2007. They released two albums without releasing any demos or EP´s before. Their sound is very varied and hardly to be compared to other bands. The songs have an approximate playing time from six to ten minutes each, so there happens a lot within the songs. There are cool riffs, doublebass, uptempo, clean guitars, acoustic guitars, whispers and even some female vocals. The music is very complex and emotional and gives the listener a certain, unique atmosphere. The production is crystal clear and transparent, so that you can hear all hidden aspects. Very unique and interesting indeed! For fans of Katatonia, Agalloch and Forgotten Tomb!

BLOODY ALCHEMY
"Insanity Chaos" CD
Label: Independent
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Death Thrash Metal
Country: France

Bloody Alchemy is a young new death-/thrash metal band from France that was founded in 2014. All members didn´t play in other bands before as it seems. This EP is their first musical sign of life. After a short intro there are three songs featured here. The music is thrash metal played the modern way with some death metal growls. If I think of death-/thrash usually, bands like Dew-Scented, The Haunted or Legion Of The Damned come to my mind. But this is not the case here. It´s almost groovy, not really fast, and doesn´t kick ass as much as I hoped. It´s a modern way of thrash, not really trendy shit, but also not interesting at all. You can listen to it easily, yes, but you certainly won´t go nuts on this. This EP is okay, nothing more. You can get it on CD-R or digital download on Bandcamp. Make your choice…

"Invisible Reality + Promo 1991" CD
Label: Deformeathing
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Death Metal
Country: Poland

Poland was always famous for good death metal; just think of Vader or the newer albums by Behemoth. But there are also always forgotten bands from ancient times that were great as well! One of those bands were Trauma who came out of the death-/thrashers Thanatos (not the Dutch band with the same name!) who were active from 1988 to 1990 and released two demos. As Trauma they continued from 1991 on until today and released two demos, two EP´s and seven full-length albums. Here you have the very first material of Trauma: the first two demos “Promo 1991” and the “Invisible Reality” demo from 1992. The music still has the great underground spirit that I expected from that era. After a mystical intro you can hear really fantastic death metal in the old vein. The music can be compared to the first Asphyx album “Embrace The Death”, Baphomet (US), Demigod, Morgoth, Benediction and Grave, but also their Polish comrades of Pandemonium/Domain. Of course the sound is raw because there are only demos included here. But they perfectly capture the spirit of the ancient days! This is a must for true death metal fans!

GREAY HEAVEN FALL
"Black Wisdom" CD
Label: Aesthetics Of Devastation
Release Date: 2015
Genre: Black Death Metal
Country: Russia

The name Grey Heaven Fall reminds me on modern metalcore stuff, but fortunately, it´s not! This is a cold black-/death metal horde from Russia founded in 2006 and having released two demos and two albums so far. They play a strange orthodox black metal style with few death metal influences, disharmonic guitar tunes and crazy, varied vocals. The music is fast, technical and chaotic with many avant-garde elements. The music reminds me heavily on bands like Deathspell Omega, Aosoth, Blut Aus Nord, new Satyricon, Nightbringer or Acrimonious. The sound is good, but dirty. Sometimes Grey Heaven Fall also have some psychedelic tunes. Although the music is experimental and weird sometimes, it´s always raw as hell. The powerful production pounds seriously. This is no retro old school black metal here, but still full of hate and aggression!

This is a very chaotic split-CD here! Yacøpsæ is a hardcore band from Hamburg founded byck in 1990 and having released ten albums and several split´s yet. This time they are featured with twelve new songs in the typical chaotic vein. With their raw mix of hardcore and grindcore and immense uptempo  they never betrayed their roots. Only their last track “Schacht” lasts more than four minutes, all others not even two minutes?! This is full of aggression and energy, but also hard to deal with. The other featured band is Irate Architect from with four songs. They are brutal too, but more in the standard grindcore-/death metal direction. They have only released one full-length album and an EP yet before this split-CD reached the light of day. If you like bands like Exhumed, Mortician, Impaled, Aborted, Haemorrhage, Macabre, Impetigo and stuff like that, with fast blasts and a fat production, then you will surely like this. If you´re into chaotic grindcore stuff, get your chance here! 16 songs in only 28 minutes can be a lot of fun, haha!

This is a really funny record! Sunrunner from USA were founded in 2008. This is their their album. And they always say that they play heavy metal with prog rock influence, but no prog metal, haha! Well, basically, this is really old school metal in 80´s style with cool guitars, wild solos, a lot of uptempo and high vocals, but they also have some funny sung refrains which sounds like a pirate metal parody, like in “The Plummet”. But there are also many different influences by bands like Iron Maiden, Black Sabbath, some epic heaviness of Cirith Ungol or The Lord Weird Slough Feg and even Rush and Pigeon Toe. The absolute highlight is the title track at the end of the album, lasting about 21 minutes which shows all faces of the band! Amazing! It´s a bit obscure, but I guess you will like this!

The music is well-played, with good riffs and cool breaks, but still straight and brutal as hell. It´s fast and brutal. The vocals are deep growls straight out of hell. Praesepe is a band from Poland playing pagan folk metal since 2002. Before that they were called Ars Moriendi and played black-/death. But you can´t really hear that anymore. You can hear great guitar work from the very first tunes. There are deep guitars with a lot of melodic solos and melody lines. For me, their music has a Swedish touch. They have an epic sound, often using acoustic guitars and stuff like that. Ther are screaming vocals in the verses and some soft choirs in the background. The fast parts are well-played. The five songs have a long approximate playing time of at least five minutes each. The whole album has a nice, warm atmosphere. Although the band states Dissection, Emperor, Edge Of Sanity and even Ved Buens Ende as their main influences, I would also name bands like Borknagar, Vintersorg, Ulver, Solefald or Manegarm. The album doesn´t have many highlights, but there´s also no loss of quality. You can hear it in the background while relaxing or reading s book. Very nice!

A few days ago I wrote a review about the second album “Afterlife” by the Austrian black metal band Edge Of Night. This is the solo project of their singer, but he´s actually located in Germany. Path 11 was founded in 2009, but this debut from 2016 is the only release to date. Progressive black-/death metal is a strange description, but his main influences even more! Mayhem, Shining, Opeth and even Marilyn Manson are stated here? So how the hell should this sound like? The album starts with nice acoustic guitars and female vocals, but after a few minutes it gets really brutal with fast drumming and deep growls. Then a doom riff and whispers follow. In between there are some psychedelic passages as well. A lot of things are happening here. You can´t really compare this. It´s really unique, but I would say that the comparisons to Opeth fit best here. Fitting to the music, the production is fat and transparent, so you can clearly hear all single elements. Haha!! This is really funny now! As a German writer for this SouthAmerican zine I was recruited to help out with some reviews and get this one here! This band is German, lives in my direct neighbor town, only 16 km away, and I never even heard of this band?! What the fuck?? I know the previous band of two of those musicians, Deathstruction, though. But this is way different. While Deathstruction was death-/thrash metal, this is more in the Viking-/death metal direction. The sound like a mix of Unleashed, Amon Amarth and a little Bathory maybe. There are cool rocking riffs, much doublebass and pounding background vocals. The sound is raw and dry and supports the coldness of the North where the Vikings lived.  Sometimes I wish the music could have been faster here and there. Also the background vocals sometimes sound like they were drunk by met, haha! But it´s a lot of fun to listen to this album which follows no trends and is hardly to compare to other bands. There´s no stupid rip off here. Their sound is pretty unique and works well. This is really one of the much better melodic death metal albums for sure.

This music is very extreme. You can hear main influences by Arch Enemy, The Haunted, In Flames and Dark Tranquillity, but also some modern anger within the songs. The vocals are deep growls which sound really cool. The production is voluminous and sets the power to the offered music. Eternal Delyria are from Switzerland and were founded in 2011. There was a 6-track-EP in 2014, and now here we have their debut album featuring an intro and nine other tracks. Not only the band logo which looks like metalcore, also the music is very modern. The music is melodic and bombastic, they have an aggressive singer. They sound like Children Of Bodom or Cemetery Of Scream a little bit, but the orchestrations and the vocals also remind me heavily on Cradle Of Filth. In between there are some metalcore riffs for jumping; all in all a strange, but quite interesting mix. But the music is very varied and sometimes overloaded. They step over lines and look from genre to genre without flowing a certain path. Maybe for Children Of Bodom fans it´s too orchestral, maybe for Cradle Of Filth fans it´s too modern, but certainly, for core kiddies it´s too brutal black metal-like… This is more for bombastic black metal fans, but not bad at all!

I already wrote a review about this great progressive metal band from Canada. Already founded back in 1991, this here is their third of four studio albums in total. It´s as great as their follow-up album “The Long Road Home”. The music is well-played and varied and Philip Leite is a fantastic singer with as great voice. Nearly all songs last longer than five minutes, so there is a lot going on within the songs. Same here: If you are into bands like Fates Warning, early Queensryche, Lethal, Opposite Earth, Time Machine, Iced Earth and Kamelot, take your chance to get this masterpiece!

Genre: Brutal Death Metal/Grindcore
Country: Germany

Eastfrisian Terror is a funny name for a German grindcore band because Eastfrisia is a region in the north of Germany. Their lyrics are held in the old German accent which is even hard to understand for Germans in general. But you can´t understand the lyrics anyway. This is typical grindcore with uptempo and very deep growls. The production is clear and powerful. If you like bands like Rotten Sound, Anal Cunt, Nasum or Exhumed and you don´t care about stupid lyrics, you will surely like it…

Release Date: 2015

Again we have Burial Vault here, the young masters of German melodic death metal- They were founded in 2006 and have released two EP´s and three studio albums to date. On their latest output, “Unity In Pluralism”, they still redefined their own sound. They still keep their sound, but the style is more varied and a little more structured. They have many different influences, but they don´t copy those bands. Furthermore they include all those different influences to a unique style which is hardly to be compared to other bands really. The modern riffs of “LCD” kick ass. “Return To Point Zero” is a musical tribute to the typical Swedish sound in the mid 90´s. I like the fact that they mostly play uptempo without losing their melody lines. The production is clear and powerful again. Burial Vault reinvent themselves with every new album which is not often to be seen nowadays. Really cool!

"Incendium" CD
Label: Apostasy Records
Release Date: 2013
Genre: Melodic Death Metal

Burial Vault are one of the most promising melodic death metal bands from Germany for sure! In the beginning, they were mainly influenced by the good old Swedish stuff, like early In Flames, Dark Tranquillity and Amon Amrath, but they soon developed their sound with new influences to bring more variety to the songs. “Incendium” is a really cool album indeed! It has the violence of old school death metal with ass-kicking riffs and doublebass, but also some nice guitar melodies which are captured in your mind. There´s a majestic intro, some really cool breaks and a well-played union within the band. The lyrics are great because it´s a concept album about Ray Bradbury´s science fiction classic “Fahrenheit 451”. The production is powerful as well. Usually, I´m not the biggest fan of melodic death because sometimes it sounds a liitle cheesy, but this album will be also great for old school death metal maniacs. Burial Vault are not wimped out or something like that. Check those guys! They deserved it!

BEGOTTEN SILENC
"Faces Of Suffering" CD
Label: Independent
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Country: Hungary

Begotten Silence is a melodic death metal band from Hungary that was founded in 2010. After a demo and a 3-track-EP this is finally their debut album which features ten tracks; two of them are sung in Hungarian. One of those two tracks, “Vörös Béklyo”, was already featured on the EP. All other ones are new. But this has actually not much to do with the great traditional Swedish sound. This here is more modern; but well-played and still with good spirit. They have some influences by Dark Tranquillity and Children Of Bodom for sure, but they also use some core riffs here and there. They also like death metal which shows the brutality of the songs. Begotten Silence are not as traditional as most melodic death metal bands, but they´re also not as cheasy as the most ones. This is pretty good stuff, but with both feet in the present, not the past. Weak point is that this album is only available in digital, not physical format…

TRIDENTIFER
"Left To Rot" CD
Label: Voodoo Chamber Records
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Death Metal
Country: Germany

In the 90´s, there was a nice German doom-/death metal band called Dark which were managed by Crematory drummer Markus Jüllich. They even sounded like Crematory on the first two albums. They split up after three albums in 1999. Their first album “Endless Dreams Of Sadness” was quite popular in Germany back then. But you never heard anything of them ever since. Now their ex-guitarist finally gives a sign of life again with his solo project called Tridentifer which does not sound like his ex-band at all. This is real death metal, the traditional and groovy way. One demo and two albums have been released now. The sound reminds n old Swedish death metal bands, but with more slow, doomy riffs. The music reminds on bands like Entombed/Nihilist, Carnage, Unleashed, Dismember and stuff like that, but still has an own identity. The guitar work is really great and the clear production kicks ass as well. While guitarist Marco is responsible for the whole music, he now has a singer called Erik who does all the vocals. Check this one out!

One of the many bands with the name Insania came from Italy, were active from 1989 to 1997 and released one demo in 1994 before they split up and changed their name into Insania.11 (Insania Undici; spelled the Italian way) after reawakening the band in 2008. They are the slow guys because eight years after the refoundation, this is their very first release under the new name. There are five songs on this EP which is unfortunately only a digital, not physical release, with lyrics completely held in Italian language. They play very fast death-/thrash metal like Mortification, but also with some Swedish sounding riffs in the vein of early Dark Tranquillity. The Italian vocals sound really brutal and give some special aggression to the whole sound of the band. The production is modern and a little sterile maybe, but it captures the rage of the songs quite well. All in all, it´s a good release if you´re not too much much into old school stuff.

Fabulous Desaster, hailing from the former German capital Bonn, were founded in 2010. Except of bassist/singer Andi who came from a heavy metal band called Hornado in 2014, all original members, among them the two Terstegge brothers Matthias (guitars) and Lukas (drums) are still left from the original line-up. First they released an EP and three demos. This here is their debut album which is a self-produced, really manufactured CD. And it sounds really cool. It´s great retro thrash, the old school way, of course best compared to Exodus on the first 2-3 records. The vocals really sound like Steve “Zetro” Souza. The songs have that special old school feeling and the production is much more natural than on the latest, overproduced Exodus albums. Nothing special actually, but a really nice one which makes a lot of fun!

When I hear the band name Vortex, I always think of the classic heavy metal band from The Netherlands first. But actually, this is a band from Canada playing modern melodic death metal with metalcore elements. They were already founded in1998 and have released six albums. I´m really surprised about that! Their music is heavy and well-played, has some spooky keyboards, but mainly it´s full of blasts, breakdowns, doublebass and aggressive vocals. But it´s really modern. The sound sucks though. It´s modern and trendy. The production sounds powerful, yes, but it doesn´t kick ass really. You have sterile guitar walls and too triggered drums that sound totally unnatural. Of course, the musicians are talented. This also goes out to their songs. The sterile sound destroys everything, in my opinion. Okay, I think if you are into modern stuff like The Black Dahlia Murder and stuff like that, you will get along with this. But traditional metalheads should better stay away…

They play nice doom-/death metal, obviously influenced by bands like Cianide, Bolt-Thrower, Obituary and Autopsy. The sound is warm and scary, not clean or powerful at all. It souds like a tape was copied too many time. That´s not really bad though because the warm sound gives the music a spooky, occult atmosphere. Riffs and drumming are simple, the deep, monotone growls are used in a hypnotic way. There´s actually nothing special here, but it works! I really like this recording. Well, for a full-length album they should have a better sound in the future, but for a short demo or EP to introduce the band, it´s totally okay like this.

Wolvencrown is a black metal band from England that was founded in 2015. This new EP has four tracks and is their only release to date. Unfortunately, this is a digital, not physical release. The opener Beneath The Frozen Moon” starts atmospheric with some piano until guitars and drums get unfolded. They play fast and raw black metal, but yet melodic as well. The guitars are melodic, but they don´t really spread any beauty into the music. Behind the fast and raw black metal there are also some slightly arranged keyboards – hardly to notice – in the back. In between there are also some heroic clean vocals in the vein of Vintersorg and also clean guitars with spoken words. But the main picture of this release is furious black metal, played well and very varied. A lot of things happen here without being “untrue”. Wolvencrown seemingly don´t have problems in playing black metal the musical way, with harmonic guitars and interesting arrangements. It´s too melodic for true black metal, but too rough for melodic black metal; somewhere in between. Very nice! Check them!

MYTH OF A LIFE
"She Who Invites" CD
Label: Sleaszy Rider Records
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Melodic Death Metal
Country: England

Myth Of A Life is a melodic death metal band from England founded in 2013. Since then, they have release an EP and an album. The album starts with a nice acoustic intro. Then all hell breaks loose. There is straight, fast and heavy death metal the Swedish way with brutal vocals. At The Gates is the first name I must think of, also very early Dark Tranquillity, Arch Enemy and The Crown. The playing of the band is tight as hell. The production is strong and powerful. Although the music is definitely dedicated to the mid-/late 90´s, the band lives in the present. The old roots are obvious, but Myth Of A Lie don´t sound old-fashioned. This is the perfect compromise between the past and the present. If you like the bands above mentioned, you will surely get into this!

"Via" EP
Label: Via Nocturna
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Avantgarde Black Metal
Country: Italy

If you missed all releases from this band here, now you have the chance! Derhead from Italy have released two demos and this EP here, now all compiled on one CD. That´s also the reason why this EP has album length here. Derhead play avantgarde black metal which is not too electronic and chaotic luckily and still fast and heavy, with cold guitars and harsh vocals. The production is thin and cold, the drum computer sounds a little sterile, but it fits well to the music they play. The music is a cool mix of aggressive elements and slow intensive riffs. It´s hard to compare to other bands, but I guess that fans of new Satyricon, Mysticum and Dodheimsgard will surely like this, although Derhead actually have a unique sound.

"War Beast" CD

On Metal Archives, there are eight bands from the United States wearing the name Legion. I thought of black metal first, maybe because of the ex-Marduk singer, but actually this is pure, classic heavy metal. This band from 1999 only released two albums since then. Both guitarists Frank and Joe Adamo are brothers. They are obviously heavily inspired by late 70´s and early 80´s rock and metal bands like Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, Mercyful Fate and Rainbow. The songs are simple and straight. The high-pitched vocals are sometimes hard to deal with and getting on my nerves, not really bad actually, but also not really good. The production is raw and sounds like a good demo, nothing more. That´s okay though because it shows the honesty and love for the music. There are some cool riffs and wild solos on this albums. I think the weakest point here are the vocals the longer you listen to this album. Well, if you are a die-hard metalhead who wants to have everything old school, you can go try this band, but don´t expect too much…

"Creation" CD
Label: Pure Steel Records
Release Date: 2016

I really like a lot of US power metal, but I´m not the biggest fan of orchestral power metal from Europe. Psychoprism found a great compromise here. They were founded in 2012 and released an EP and this album yet. The vocals are high-pitched like in most US metal bands. The singer reminds me a bit on Rick Mythiasin (Predator, ex-Steel Prophet), but the music is more bombastic and epic. They have cool, pounding riffs with dominant keyboards. They remind me on bands like Kamelot,  Evergrey of Porta Inferi from Czech Republic. The production is as bombastic as the music, but not as overproduced as most bands of this genre do; a heavy sound without sterile, modern trigger sounds etc. It´s a kind of modern power metal, not too old school, not too epic, and even slightly progressive. Well done!

Sarasin from Canada already released a 4-track mini-LP in 1987. That´s all. This album is their first musical sign of life since then. I don´t know the old EP. I can only tell you that this new album reminds me heavily on Black Sabbath, but with a less doomy, but more groovy sound. There are cool riffs and goo solos on it. The vocals are a little bit in the style of Ozzy, but without imitating his voice, like many doom metal band do. The production is powerful, but not too modern, so it´s really fun to listen to Sarasin. They play the old sound, but not in stupid retro style, but they walk their own path in bringing the old sound to the present. Really cool!

Several changes have been done in the past of Axemaster. They were first active from 1982 to 1991 and released two demos and two albums during that period before they changed their name twice: The Awakening (one demo and one album from 1991 to 1995) and Inner Terror (one album between 2008 and 2010). Another five years later they finally released a new album under the mociker of Axemaster again. And this is really cool power-/thrash metal the American way with melodic, epic vocals. The riffs are sharp like razorblades and the vocals remind on bands like Metal Church, Heretic, Attacker, Sleepy Hollow and stuff like that. But it´s not retro at all! It´s old school metal, yes, but Axemaster live in the present without doubt. They have an epic, mystical sound with warm atmosphere which is really cool! If you think that Ancillotti is a solo project, you´re actually wrong! But the name of the band fits perfectly though because three of the four guys in the band belong to the Ancillotti family: Singer Daniele “Bud” Ancillotti is also the singer of the Italian heavy metal heroes Strana Officina. He´s the brother of bassist Sandro “Bid” Ancillotti (both also play together in Bud Tribe) and the father of drummer Brian Ancillotti. Only their guitarist Luciano “Ciano” Toscani is no family member, but all four musicians are still the original line-up of this band which was founded in 2009. This is their second album. Because of the voice, it´s hard to not compare Ancillotti to Strana Officina, but Ancillotti sound more like German here and there; a mix of Strana Officina, Grave Digger and Accept maybe. The songs kick ass big time and the production pushes you against the wall. This is maybe the best classic underground metal album released in 2016! Get it!

Female singer Leather Leone left in 1992 and returned in 2013. This is their second common album in a row after her comeback. Today the music is more straight and edgy than in the past. In the 80´s they had real hymns kicking ass with hymnic choruses. Today they play pounding midtempo metal. Leahter Leone still has a great voice, but all in all, the music is too standard maybe. It´s not bad at all. I like it, but it doesn´t have the hymns anymore that I expected. But it´s still good, traditional metal that every US metal fan should like.

They say their main influences are Celtic Frost, Opeth, Black Sabbath and Mercyful Fate mainly. So you can imagine that a lot of things happen here. It´s doomy metal with keyboards and growls, but there are also some aggressive attacks here. Two short intermezzos and twelve songs are added here which last between five and nearly ten minutes. All songs sound different, but have the same dark atmosphere. The dark orchestral moments sometimes really remind on Celtic Frost´s “Into The Pandemonium”, but it´s more doom-/death metal all in all. All songs are well-arranged and well-played. It never gets boring here. But also it doesn´t sound too complicated strangely although so many things happen. If you like experimental dark and brutal music, like e. g. Opeth, you must hear that!

The album starts with a nice intro featuring clean guitars and violins which play sad, melancholic melodies. And the music stays mostly slow and depressive, but transfers a nice mood and atmosphere. The sound is very transparent, so that you can hear everything quite clear. But the vocals are harsh and aggressive. The music reminds me on Burzum, Wigrid, Shining, Forgotten Tomb and Lifelover, but sometimes also on Urgehal or Apotheosis Omega. It never gets boring like most suicidal-/depressive black metal bands. The heavy sound of the German language fits perfectly to the raw music. It´s nice that the music is always melodic without losing its roughness. I think this is a really cool German black metal release!

A little bit they remind me on other German bands like Nocte Obducta, Lunar Aurora, Nagelfar and early Dornenreich, but without just copying their certain style. They have influences of classic heavy metal, rock´n´roll, punk and few folk elements. They are ironic all the time and having fun. So it´s not as bad as I was afraid of. It´s not meant seriously, so even if you don´t like such music, you can still have fun with that. The female vocals are quite cool, although Captain Mary Read (as she calls herself) suffers from typical “German English”. The structures are very simple and to keep in mind easily. There are some hippie doom vocals later, but also harmonic choirs and bombastic sounds that remind me on bands like Borknagar and Vintersorg. There´s a lot of stuff going on on this sixth album by this Polish band. It´s really hard to say what it exactly sounds like or which kind of metal this really is. But it´s very varied, atmospheric and interesting all the time! It´s no easy-listening stuff at all, but really worthy to take a listen here!

DIVISION VANSINNE
"Dimension Darkness" CD
Label: Black Lion Records
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Black Death Metal
Country: Sweden

There´s not much to be told about Division Vansinne yet. Those Swedish black-/deathers were already founded in 2008, but haven´t released anything until this debut album released in late 2016. And what is to be heard is great blackened death metal, fast and heavy, precisely played and with deep growled vocals. They don´t sound like a Swedish band at all. They play the blasphemic American sound like Morbid Angel, Deicide, Immolation, Imprecation, Incantation, maybe a little Krisiun from Brazil, and that´s all. The music is technical, but still straight enough to carry the dark spirit of the 90´s. There are fast guitars without melodies, a lot of uptempo drums, some cool breaks and sinister vokillz. If you like the evil darkness of death metal, here you get your chance!

Label: Miner Recordings
Release Date: 2015
Genre: Death Metal
Country: Croatia

Four different bands with the name Defiant are mentioned on Metal Archives, but those guys are the death metal band from Croatia which was created in 2005. One demo and three albums have been released since then. I´m a bit irritated that Metal Archives say it´s melodic death metal because this is really raw and brutal. Maybe the old stuff… I don´t know. But this is pure death metal the traditional way with cool riffs, fast drums, deep growls and a lot of power. But musicians are great, but the music is still kept straight. The album has a fat, but not modern or sterile production. Everything is really great here! Fans of Vader and Morbid Angel will like this very much for sure!

DEATHWINTER
"Manifestations Of Death" CD
Label: Depressive Illusions
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Black Metal
Country: Australia

Deathwinter is a black metal band from Australia. There have been an album and a split CD from Moloch´s label Depressive Illusions from Ukraine. That´s all! Also the line-up of this band is completely unknown. So what to tell you now? Deathwinter play raw, but slow black metal the traditional way, but they also have some spooky keyboards in the background to catch some cold atmosphere. There are some nice, simple guitar melodies and harsh vocals. Although it´s not that fast, it sounds very evil. The production has a raw demo sound which fits perfectly to the music and style of Deathwinter. All in all, there´s nothing special on Deathwinter actually, but it´s a nice and solid old school black metal release.

Unborn Suffer from Poland have been playing brutal grind-death metal since 2001 now and have released five albums. Well, I´m not the biggest grindcore fan, and I have to say that everything always sounds the same for me… There are deep guitars and bass with riffs you can´t really hear in detail, fast and technical drumming with a lot of breaks and deep chaotic growls. The production is quite powerful, not too sterile here… But all songs sound the same and there´s nothing kept in mind here. Also, it´s typical fpr gindcore to have 17 songs in only 27 minutes playing time. Well, if oyu are into grindcore, check them. If not, stay away…

KONTAGION
"[R-!-E]LENTLESS" CD
Label: Infernum Media
Release Date: 2015
Genre: Industrial/Groove Metal
Country: Poland

Kontagion is an industrial-/groove metal band from Poland. They were founded in 2007 and released two albums to date. The music is very modern and technical with pounding riffs and mechanical noises in the background. The music can be best compared to Godflesh, Meshuggah, Ministry, Neurosis, Treponem Pal, Fear Factory, Pantera and Killing Joke, I guess, although I have to say that Kontagion mixed their own identity and style by all those influences. This is for people who loved the modern sound in 1995. It´s neither for nur metalheads nor for old school thrashers. If you like the modernization that started in the mid-/late 90´s, you can get your chance here. I think it´s okay because I grew up in this period and today it´s not a trend to copy this. But I won´t become a true fan as well…

And now this EP follows, featuring four long tracks full of melancholy and tristesse. The music is really slow and the vocals are fucking sick! The melodic vocals in between show no beauty at all, and the screams sound fucking insane! Sometimes a piano gives us a little break. This is nothing for weak nerves for sure! If you are into Shining, Lifelover, Anathema, Katatonia, Agalloch or Forgotten Tomb, maybe you will get along with this one. But don´t tell me I didn´t warn you of Deadspace, haha!

DEAD CONCEPTION
"Rebirth Painted Death" Demo
Label: Independent
Release Date: 2015
Genre: Death Metal
Country: Poland

Dead Conception is a death metal band from Poland founded in 2014. They had one digital track in the year of their foundation and released their first 5-track-demo here. Poland is famous for good old death metal, and so it´s no surprise that those guys play death metal too. They play death metal in the vein of their land mates Vader and Behemoth, very brutal and technical stuff with lots of doublebass, blasts, breaks and wild lead guitars. The production is good as well, a very powerful and transparent one which is not usual for a musical direction like this. Sometimes, also newer albums by Morbid Angel and Deicide come to my mind while listening to this. This is very good death metal without any standard retro trips.

"Infinite Circles" CD
Label: Trascending Records
Release Date: 2016
Genre: Death Metal
Country: Germany

Those Betrayal here come from Germany and were founded in 2005. But after only one EP and one demo, this is their first full-length album. They play melodic death metal the Swedish way. Their fast and technical, but always melodic music reminds me on very early In Flames, early Dark Tranquillity, At The Gates, Soilwork, Ceremonial Oath or the Greek band Nightrage. The music is well-played, the song structures are varied and the production and good and powerful. Nice thing to hear is that they have obvious influences without copying the mentioned band above. Also it´s cool that they always surprise with blastbeats and acoustic guitars in between. This is melodic death metal, but not too melodic and heavy enough for wimps.

There are four bands known under the monicker of Astarot, but this horde is the brutal death metal band from Poland which was founded in 2012. This album was finished and uploaded in 2015, but officially released on CD in early 2016. The music is a kind of porn grind with perverse lyrics, but musically, it´s not as bad as I was afraid of. Although this is for grindcore- and not for traditional death metal fans. The music is fast and pounding, the drums are rapid fire like a machine gun, the growls are the deepest you could imagine. The music can be compared to hordes like Dissection, Dawn, Sacramentum, Mörk Gryning, Naglfar, Netherbird, Hyperion, Vinterland and stuff like that. The music is well-played and the production is clear and cold. I like the typical black metal from Finland a lot, but this sounds really fresh.
