THE OUTSIGHT, our music is aimed to be more thrashy, still
keeping our identity."
You are a relatively young band with just 2 years since
your formation. How would you characterize the development
of your band during this short period?
OUTSIGHT is born from the ashes of a melodic black metal
band called SUSPICIONA (http://suspiciona.bandcamp.com/).
When our bass player left the project in order to get more
involved in his, we decided to focus on a new direction.
With THE OUTSIGHT, our music is aimed to be more thrashy,
still keeping our identity. As we live in distant cities
now, we cannot work together as often as we want in a same
place. That is why we have to be strongly organized to
produce the best that we can!
2. Despite your short trajectory you have become with a
great sounding Demo with 4 well produced tracks, pretty
technical and well structured. Could
you tell us some aspects of the production?
We are very proud because the demo is 100%
self-produced. We recorded it at home and then mixed
it and mastered it together, on our laptop! That was a very
long process, especially the mixing period. We spent
approximately one year to produce this demo. It is hard to
find the good sound, the good effect... Tunes are
permanently recomposed, revisited. When you hear your own
music, you always need to question it. The hardest point is
to know when you have to stop and be satisfied!
It is very hard to manage all the aspects of a music
production, especially when you have limited means. But we
have learnt a lot and now we are ready for the next step :
What are the most memorable memories would you extract from
your early days? It
was so difficult at the beginning?
to the youth of THE OUTSIGHT, our memorable memories must be
our drinking sessions! One of our guitar players is not a
huge drinker, and his discovering of Jägermeister was quite
freaky… and brain blasting hahaha! Seriously, for now, the
best part of those past two years, is the time that we spent
to build a small but sweet and warm room in the garden of
our drummer. Some good studio sessions are planned here now!
Unfortunately we also have a quite sad memory, the departure
of our former singer, some months ago, which is a very old
friend. We really thank him for all the time he spent and
the work he did with us.
How would you describe THE OUTSIGHT as a whole? Is there
anything that makes the group different compared to most new
and upcoming bands?
are friends from more than 15 years now. That implies that
we know each of us very, very well. There is no real leader
in our band. There is no tyrant like in many bands. That has
the main disadvantage that a simple choice can be very time
consuming… But we all need to be involved in this band. We
are blood brothers. That may sound overdone, but that’s
the way we live and feel it.
Do you have serious opportunities for live shows in France?
How many times per month can you play live?
live in France is very difficult. There are few concert
halls that allow metal bands to play and many of French
“metal bars” do not plan concert because of their too
At the same time, our professional lives led us to live far
from each other. It is difficult for us to plan concerts;
this is why we focus on the next release now. When it will
be out, we will think of an efficient way to spread our
What are the most memorable shows that you played? Any funny
road stories to tell?
no hesitation, our best memory among all is when we opened
the show for DESTINITY, a very famous French death metal
band that you MUST listen to!! It was a fucking great night.
We have many other great memories because we often played
with bands composed of very good friends. Metal is a big
horny and juicy family! Unfortunately, alcohol does not
always let us remember the little funny things…
Can you explain the method of songwriting employed by THE
OUTSIGHT? Is the writing process generally collective or
does one member often craft the song on his own?
song has a main writer but the final result is collective.
Generally, one of us lays the foundations for a song
structure and the main melodies and riffs. Then we write the
harmonies and arrangements together to get coherence among
all the songs.
For the “All and Naught” demo, the lyrics were
exclusively written by our former singer. But for the album,
we plan to improve our songwriting process by including the
lyrics and the themes. We aim to produce a really coherent
story of words and riffs. As we said before, THE OUTSIGHT is
a small family: anyone of us is involved, to varying
degrees, in the choices we make for the band. It takes
times, but that the way we feel it.
I assume you have in plans to release an album. What music
format do you prefer the most; vinyl, CD, or cassettes? Do
you think it is really good to release one album in these
three mentioned formats?
plan to release our first album before the end of 2014. It
should be available in CD format and in mp3/flac format.
Nowadays, direct download seems to be a good media. It
allows to share music fastest and to spread it all over the
world for a lowest investment (no distributor over-pricing,
...). This is better for the bands as for the
"customers". Moreover, our goal is not to make
money but to share our work with as many people as possible.
So we press our releases on CD format and make it available
for free on Bandcamp (MP3/FLAC) or for a very low price (CD)
in order to cover shipping.
What are your thoughts about the underground scene and the
French scene in particular?
french metal scene is gorgeous. We’ve got a lot of
talented death metal band such as GOJIRA, BENIGHTED,
DESTINITY, LOUDBLAST, KRONOS, GOROD… and the
“Avant-garde” black metal scene is well-stocked with
bands such as ANTAEUS, DEATHPELL OMEGA, ARKHON INFAUSTUS,
Moreover there are many small groups that have a lot of
talent even if they are not yet widely known.
No more questions my friend. Just thanks for your time and
good luck for your future plans. Closing
of all, thank you for giving us the opportunity to speak,
and for your support. We invite people to check our Facebook
/ Bandcamp profiles and get our free EP "All and
Naught", to get an idea of what to expect in the next
release. Of course we advise them to regularly visit the
Pain Fucktory page too.
Once again, thank you, friend on the other side of the
world! We hope we will meet one of these days, maybe during
a show in your country! Who knows…
