In most cases, I hate writing tons of reviews for unknown bands because mostly, the result is that you like an album at first, but recognize that you don´t really listen to them later on because you already have all the classics at home. But there are also exceptions, like OPEN ACCESS from Poland who really surprised me with their good folk metal with lovely vocals. It´s not cheesy, like most of those bands, and they have a unique sounds which can convince. I contacted female singer Malwina Szałęga to introduce this great, but unknown band.

Hi Malwina! Please tell us about the foundation, the development and the releases of OPEN ACCESS first!

Hi Daniel! So the Open Access band was founded in 2013 in Cracow, Poland. Members of the band have changed over the years. I've joined to the group in 2016, replacing the former vocalist with whom Open Access released first EP "Over a Mountain Peak" in 2015. When I've come to the band we've started to work on new songs for the next album. I took care of the vocals, writing lyrics and creating vocal lines to the music composed by the band. And after quite long pre-production we released our first long-play album "Toward the Wilderness".

Have you played in other bands before?

Yes, I was a part of many bands and projects, but I can say that with none of them I haven't developed myself, succeeded and learned as in OPEN ACCESS. But I took many lessons from every each one project, there is no doubt. With OPEN ACCESS I get this great possibility to perform in different places, also abroad. Being a part of this band I am growing up as a singer, songwriter and performer as well.

The band name does not really say much about your music. What was the idea behind it?

I am not really familiar with the story behind the name because I am not a founder of the band, but as our boys from the band told me, name "Open Access" relates to the music we create. We think that our music is very varied, plenty of inspirations from different styles of music, and that's why it should be open for everyone and everyone could find something worth listening. We are not closing ourselves only in one genre, but still trying to find new inspirations from every kind of music.

Which bands are your main influences?

As I said in last answer, we get inspirations from many music styles. Every member of the band have its own favourite bands and styles, and that is what he adds to the music created by the whole band. Personally, my favourite music and vocalists are in the bands like Nightwish, especially with Floor Jansen, Epica, Within Temptation, Evanescence. But in other way, our rhythm guitarist Piotr can say that one of his favourite bands is Metallica. Besides, our bassist Jakub likes Ensiferum and Equilibrium, so he is closest with his music taste to the music we represent in general.

What are your lyrics about? Is there any message to spread for your listeners?

I try to write lyrics based on my own experiences and observations of the world. Some of the lyrics on "Toward the Wilderness" are about nature and what threaten its existence, about people who care only about their own interest. Rest of them are just creations of my imagination, I guess. But in every story there is some truth behind or inspiration, for example, from legends or novels. In each case, I think that interpretation belongs to the listeners.

Your debut album “Toward The Wilderness” was released by Art Of The Night Productions. How did you get in contact with them?

Art of The Night Productions specializes in releasing folk metal albums recorded by many Polish bands, but not only, so we decided to cooperate with them too. Anyway, this label is getting more and more popular in Poland.

This label also released the Elforg album which I like a lot. They´re also from Poland. Are you in contact with them?

Yes, we know each other and we play on some concerts together, like on Fantasy Folk Fest in Poland in the company of more other folk metal bands. Maybe we will have more occasions in the future to play with them at one stage.

Is there a kind of folk metal scene in Poland? Or are OPEN ACCES and Elforg exceptions?

When I've joined OPEN ACCESS, I've observed that there are so many bands making such kind of music like folk metal, but in very different ways of which I've never heard before. There are bands playing pure folk metal I can say, using traditional instruments and drawing inspirations from Slavic, Celtic themes with pure vocals or in more extreme cases, with growls and screams. But there are also bands like our which gets inspirations from many more genres like power-, heavy-, symphonic-, thrash- and death metal a little bit, without closing only to this well-known folk specificity. So the choice is yours, which one suits you most!

I like the cover artwork a lot! Who did it? And how did you get in contact with the painter?

Thank you on behalf of Robert Kudera who made it! We really liked his graphics which we found via internet and asked him to do the special one for us. As a result, Robert did the whole graphics on the album.

Do you also play live? And will when and where will we have to see the band on stage in the future? Are there already any plans for that?

Yes, of course! We really enjoy playing live and we are trying to do that as often as possible. In the near future, we are going to play in many places in Poland like Rzeszów, Łódź, Wrocław, Stalowa Wola and many more, but we're also going abroad to play on some festivals in Czech Republic (Brno), Hungary (Budapest) and Romania (Bucharest). We hope that we will play in many more countries soon!

Please let us know about the future plans of OPEN ACCESS!

The future of OPEN ACCESS is to promote our new album first, tour around Poland and some part of Europe, make new videos and share new songs with the public. Moreover, we won't rest on our laurels, and we'll keep making new stuff and still develop ourselves.

Okay, Malwina! The last words are yours!

Thank you very much for a pleasant interview! I would like to also thank other people who are supporting us and our music! You are amazing! Without you, everything what we do wouldn't make sense. Hope to see you someday at the concerts! Cheers!
