"if black metal was a beer it would definitely be a dark and strong one..."

1. What’s the band’s ideology? Is it connected with some philosophy or something?

In the center of our songs are mainly two themes. Melancholy and nature. However no suicidal tendencies. Rather inspired of legends and German myths.

2. What’s your view on the value of music today? In what way does the abundance of music change our perception of it?

In my opinion music has the same value as in the past.

Only finding good music is more difficult. The internet and the possibillity that nearly erveryone can record their own songs is both a curse and a blessing. However, to produce a cd and to market it, like professional bands do, is expensive. But because of the new trend of music flatrates, almost no money comes back to the bands. I hope that people will change their way of thinking. Only buying music supports bands.

3. Let´s talk about your first opus "Reinkarnation". The 6 tracks on it are crushing and heavy and orchestral and epic at the same time , from start to finish. How so you attained a great deal of memorable melody in the songs. Was that a conscious effort or just something that happened as the songwriting progressed?

I write the songs in my small recording studio at home.

Occasionally I do samples of my new material to get feedback and suggestions. But usually I nearly complete the songs, before we play it as a band for the first time. In our practise room we arrange the guitars, basslines and the drumming. After that our vocalist writes a matching songtext. The process of songwriting itselfs is different everytime. I could not say that I do the orchestra first and then the guitars. Mostly I have already the main part of the song in my mind. This approch and the fact, that I try to give the orchestra its separate role is the key of our sound.

4. Are there any particular song that you feel best define the MIDVEST sound or perhaps ones you find most notable for whatever reason?

I think that everyone claims for their own songs that each sounds different.

That´s bullshit. Our style runs like a common thread through the whole album. If I had to choose it certainly would be „Reinkarnation“.

5. As I see you follows certain aesthetic in the way you dress for the band. Have you as a band developed an aesthetic that is uniquely yours?

Right from the beginning, it was clear that our outfit must be coequal to our music. It was really hard to find something matching, especially as we were frequently compared with Dimmu Borgir.

Finally the steam punk style proved to be the solution.

This style fits perfect, because of our mix of orchestral classic and black metal.

6. Midvest is not a band that plays live very often, but you did make some important appearances as for example Cologne Metal Festival 2014. Talk about that experience. Any other upcoming shows?

We spent much time on our recording last year which is why we had only few live gigs. The Cologne Metal Festival was in a break between our recording sessions. In any case we wanted to do this show and it was an honor to be able to play there in such a good position in the running order. The response of the crowd was really positive. Now, after completing our album, we are looking forward to play more often.

7. What do you think about all the fashions that come and go in the black metal in general, in the recent years?

I think it is a coming and going with only few really new ideas.

However that´s not really bad if you have not heard it that way for a longer period. I still love it.

8. Germany has some great if underrated black metal bands that never seem to get the acclaim or attention of their Scandinavian peers. Why is that? Does the German scene lack the ‘notoriety’ of the Swedish and Norwegian scenes?

Black metal is very unpopular in Germany. Over 70% of our clicks are coming from eastern Europe. Our sales also rather militate for abroad. The problem we face - and I think other black metal bands, too - is that if you want to get popular abroad you have to play there. A tour is expensive and you need much time.

You cannot live from music and so you have reconcile it with your job.

In Scandinavia - especially Norway - the popularity is the other way around.

9. We live in a globalized world where there are no borders to be crossed thanks to the internet. How do you best utilize this to gain the outmost for you band?

Video channels and internet radio are perfect platforms in order to distribute music without costs. Selling music via digital services is also quite easy and that is what we did with Reinkarnation for the first time. Receiving positive feedback or selling a cd is always great and an incredible motivation. Thanks to the internet we are able to provide our music to those who acutally like it.

10. Please define black metal with your own words, and if black metal was a beer, which one would it be?

Black metal is like life itself. Not everything is light and nice. Darkness, sorrow and fear are also our companions.

I like the interplay of light and shadows and to give also evil a form.

So if black metal was a beer it would definitely be a dark and strong one.

11. OK Marcus, It was a pleassure to interview you. I hope you enjoy the interview. Our readers are waiting for your last comments.
