Date: 04th, November 2013
(Answers by Max Gierlinger - Vocals/Bass)

Despite MAMMON are just a trio, their music sounds very complex, performing a crude and heavy death metal with some black approach.

1. You are a pretty young band with just one year of existence, Could you tell us what kind of achievements have you attained so far?

First of all we would like to say thank you for this interview! Well, you are right, we have been existing as MAMMON since one year now, we started making music together in October 2012. The last year rushed by rather fast as we hit the studio to record PHOSPHOROS already in February 2013 and had our first gig in May in our hometown, Linz, followed by several other concerts in Austria. Looking back at this short time we would say that our main achievements so far have been the fact that we recorded an EP after only four months of band history and made the release-show of PHOSPHOROS quite a success!

2. I assume there is not too easy to get established on a overpopulated scene, Is there anything that makes MAMMON different compared to most new and upcoming bands?

MAMMON has always had the approach towards music to write songs together and not to be limited by any boundaries of genres. The musical backgrounds of us three are in different corners; we listen to many various stuff and we all have been active in bands since about a decade (our guitar player even more). So you can say that even though MAMMON has been existing for one year now we are musicians with a significant experience and despite we listen to different stuff, at the end of the day we have a lot in common, especially musically speaking. This allows us to create our very own style of extreme, fast and heavy music.

3. Despite you are just a trio, your music sounds very complex and well performed. Could you pleae tell us what kind of positive feedback have you received on your shows so far?

We have been existing as MAMMON for one year now, which means that we have not played live very often yet. However, the best feedback one can get when playing a show is to see that the audience enjoys your performance and your music. So we would say that the best moment we had so far was when we were playing in Graz, Austria in front of an audience to which we were not well known at that point. However, after only two songs people started to get crazy and you could see people banging their heads everywhere. After the show some even came to us to tell us how much they enjoyed the show. This was just awesome.

4. Let´s concentrate now on your recently released "Phosphoros" EP, I would like to know some in-depth details about the production and recording process.

As we said already, we hit the studio in February 2013. We recorded our songs together with our singer’s friend Gerald Clemens Hauzenberger (check out his homepage: www.geraldhauzenberger.net) who also mixed and mastered the CD. The time in the studio was very intense; we were there for four days straight, which was a great experience as a band, it brought us closer together and we all profited from the time. After this time we took a few weeks break; no rehearsals and no listening to the material we recorded. Then again we started working on our songs again. The mixing and mastering was done over the following months together with Gerald and we released a rough mix of the song REX REGUM already in May 2013. We very much enjoyed the time in the studio and had a lot of fun together as a band and with Gerald of course as well.

5. One remarkable aspect of this EP is the cover artwork, a very well done in my opinion. Could you tell us about the artist Christina Voit and how did you got in contact with her?

Thanks! And yes, we also think that is an awesome artwork, which Christina did there. Just like Gerald, Christina is a friend of our singer, so this is how we got into contact with her. She makes great drawings which communicate the atmosphere of the picture really good. Christina totally hit the spot with what we wanted to communicate with the front cover of the EP, we are more than happy that she did the artwork! If you are interested in what else she does, you can look into her gallery at www.alynaris.deviantart.com. A visit totally pays off!

6. What are the most memorable shows that you played? Any funny stories to tell?

There are two funny moments which we will never forget, I guess. One time our drummer got hit by a water bottle while playing and, of course, was totally pissed off while continuing to play the song. After we were finished he stood up and wanted to grab his water bottle to drink – and realized the speakers on stage were so loud that the water bottle fell off and hit him while performing! The other thing was at another gig. There the fog machine was working so intensely that our guitar player could not read the set list properly and started playing a song which I did not announce. Fortunately, after a few chords he realized it, stopped playing it and together with the audience we had a great laugh about this.

7. What are some of your interests, occupations and hobbies outside of composing sick music?

Besides music we very much enjoy the Austrian nature and mountains, so we like hiking and mountaineering a lot. And our singer and our guitar player like to play Warhammer, a rather nerdy tabletop game which needs a lot of patience and passion.

8. what do you think about the current Metal scene worldwide. And the Austrian one in particular?

That’s a difficult question. I guess we cannot say much about the metal scene worldwide, but about our local one (especially the one in Linz, our hometown) we can tell you some stuff of course. In the recent years the metal scene here has gone through an interesting transformation; the fans, the bands and the scene itself has been there with great ambitions, but somehow the possibilities for concerts and events got fewer and fewer until there were not many (especially underground) concerts anymore. However, last year the situation started to change because some people got together to organize concerts, which we very much appreciate. So now you don’t only see metalheads in the local pubs and the city, but the number of concerts is increasing again, which gives the scene a boost, which is strongly anticipated. We very much like these new dynamics within the scene.

9. - Well, that would be all for the moment...thanks very much for your

Thank you very much for your questions and your interest in MAMMON, we very much appreciate this!
