Looking back at the very beginning when you first started
the band in 2000, how do you feel you have developed as
musicians and do you think you look at music a little
differently now that you’re older?
development as musicians is always in a flux – there's no
point where we stop. But the main difference between our
beginning and now is that we're more independent from
trends, hypes s.o. We're too old for this. There's no
external pressure, we've got nothing to prove. We're
creating the music we want to listen to.
After one real album release in 2007 and some demos and EP´s,
what is going on in the HYEMS camp as of now? I had heard
that their was new material being written for a 4th full
length, under BRET HARD RECORDS?
right. We're in the studio right now and recording the new
full ep “Devianz“. We're very excited because we all
feel that we have the best hyems material ever.
How is the material sounding to the previous HYEMS albums
and are you planning on doing a little touring after Release
new songs combine brutal fast, black doom and dark epic
moments in a straight to your face song structure. They're
catchy but complex likewise. It's black fucking metal.
Little touring would be great to promote the record, but I
think we'll have a focus on this next year.
When you pick songs for an album do you place them as they
were written; or do you place the songs according to a
pattern of where they fit the best?
fillers just killers. We stopped writing songs which don't
fit to the attitude of the record we want to do. There's a
vision of the sound we want to create. A song approache
lasts in the writing process until it's part of the entire
mission. 4.a Are you going to re-record any older song?
We've got many songs in the back catalogue I'd like to
re-record, but these songs would never fit to the attitude
of our actual work.
Musically, what were some of your early favorites? What
music besides black metal inspires you most profoundly?
When you write songs, do you start with a visual concept, or
a riff, or something else?
starts with a vision we all share. We've got a idea the
songs should sound like. Our guitarists build the
architecture of the song and my part is to destroy what
Do you often play gigs in Germany, and how does it occur? Is
it in small bars, or is there some bigger
"official" concert places for metal bands? Is the
crowd numerous during your live appearances?
we live in different areas in Germany we play gigs monthly.
Some of them are bigger but the normal gig situation is an
audience about 50 people. Nobody is interested in unknown
bands – we don't care anymore, that's underground!
Since the amount of black metal bands should keep on
increasing, the style currently being fashionable, how do
you think HYEMS could stand out?
don't care of distinction, we care about good songs. Why is
it good to sound unique when it sounds like shit?
In your opinion what are the advantages of German bands?
What could be much better in Germany? Please tell us what
are the bands to keep an eye on in the German underground at
underground in the western parts of Germany is dead. Live
concerts are a financial risk for the organizers and the
bands as well. The fee doesn't even cover the expenses for
fuel. But there's no reason to complain. We'll go on and
play live. It's about passion and people who share it. It's
not about a stupid flock of wethers.
To me black metal has its own aesthetic. How much do you
think about the way things should look to be black?
colors, just black and white, pictures with high contrasts
and symmetrical structures. It needs to be sublime but also
has to say: FUCK YOU!
Would you say that there is a specific concept that you
follow or can anything go as long as it is in the realm of
the philosophy of the band?
try to get to the bottom of the idea of the absent of all
values and apply this to the modern society. A core
inspiration is the work of Michael Haneke and his guiding
theme of social glaciation.
I personally am not a great friend of humans. I think most
people suck big time. What is wrong with mankind in your
lack of self-control and self-conscious.
OK man, I would like to thank you for your time and help,
please add some words to the end of this interview.
you're welcome! Please check out our new record in autumn -
it's gonna be massive! If you need a copy please let us
