by Nargathrond - Guitars/vocals
& Morbid - Vocals)
Black metal, mixing raw and fast parts with some clean
vocals and several epic moments! Very unique and varied!
Greetings here. Let´s start with short intro story. Where
did you dig out the name? How would you characterize the
development of your band during this 3 years?
Nargathrond: Hi, the name HIGURD was a spontaneous idea of
our first singer Astaroth and me. I can´t remember the
reason why we used that word, because it is a fictional word
without any meaning. And so we as a band are the meaning for
it. The development was a hard way, the constellation of
members in the band changed a few times, but now I think we
are a real strong union with good condition. I
don´t wanna talk much about the past,
the future will be better!
How would you describe HIGURD as a whole? Is there anything
that makes the group different compared to most new and
I would describe HIGURD as a unique formation. Especially
the sound and music style is really new and versatile. That
differs us from other bands. We don´t want to play
monotonous music like “true black metal” or something
like that. There are so many influences of everyone in the
band and every band member listens to different music, so we
are broad-minded to any music style. We just do what brings
us fun and not anything that the mass of people would like.
Morbid: In my opinion HIGURD is a mixture
of many different influences. We don't want to sounds like
many different bands, which grown up in past. We want to
find our own "musically" language and create our
own style. If you want to hear "pure" Black Metal
it's possible that you don't like our work. There are no
borders in music! If you ask me .. We can't explain our
thoughts in empty phrases and monotone melodies.
Experimental music is a great help to find yourself in my
it, for the first ...
- Speaking of your debut album “Gedankensturm”, could
you tell us some aspects about the recording process and if
you are satisfied with the final results?
The album was recorded by a good friend and member of my old
band GORGE RAVINE. It was not really professional but this
was good, because it was very chilled and funny. This is the
best premise for a good result. The guitars were played by
me, bass by Kbles, vocals by Astaroth and the drums by Eber.
For a non-professional album the quality is really good.
That's what our fans told us, too.
Do you have serious opportunities for live shows in Germany?
What are the most memorable shows that you played?
Germany has a real big (Underground)Metal scene and there
are much clubs where you can play a gig. Our problem is,
that we don´t have many connections but we hope that this
will change in the future. The greatest gig we played in
Erfurt at the scene club From Hell with Forgotten Tomb, Ereb
Altor, Isole and Somrak…. a really fine memory. The
funniest gig we played was at Auenland Festival on a crooked
stage with no light in front of a crowd of hippies... in the middle of the woods.
Can you explain the method of songwriting employed by
HIGURD? Is the writing process generally collective or does
one member often craft the song on his own?
I am responsible for the basic structure of the songs and
with these ideas we go in our rehearsal room and complete
everything.Further we work with guitar pro, because we live
in different cities, so everybody can put his ideas on the
program file and so everyone can work on his stuff at home.
That´s really practical.
Morbid: Yes, the most of our
songs wrote Nargathrond together with our old singer.
Especially for our new work, we try to collect as much ideas
as we can. So Talil, our new guitarist and I help him. Yes,
we could say .... everybody of HIGURD is a important part of
our songwriting. We can't miss anyone of us. We're all a
part of our own work!
6. What are some of your interests, occupations and
hobbies outside of composing sick music?
I work as a retail dealer, Kbles and Chi-Ses as a store man,
Morbid and Talil study something. I think we all have
principal the same interests like hanging around with
friends, drinking beer, go to music festivals and at least
have some chicks haha.
Morbid: I like to be in nature
with a few of my friends. Sometimes alone, too. I really
like to compose music on my own. Sometimes I visit small
concerts on weekends or draw any pictures.
7. Let´s talk about your presence in black metal scene,
do you have a strong basis on your local scene? how has been
the feedback to your álbum so far?
We are very experimental, this is good for us, because we
get gigs with non-black metal bands and we don´t fall out
of line, further combine with the other music styles. Beyond
that, some people say that we are not “true” (like it's
usual in black metal-vocabulary) but we don´t give a fuck
about those. And I think we have a lot of fans in our local
area but we would be happy if there are more in other
regions. Often we got a really good feedback to our album,
because people like the variety and the sound.
8. How would you define black metal? Could you say there
is a solid black metal scene in your región?
Black Metal is the heaviest and most extreme music which
exists. You can put all your feelings, frustration and hate
in it. In my region, black metal is not so popular but a few
cities wider, there are a lots bands especially in the
Morbid: Hmmmmmm. There is a
"BM-scene" here, but we are all not a real part of
this. Black Metal is an expression of the feelings, you
could'nt talk about in my opinion. A scene which is mainly
ruled by drunken idiots, who don't celebrate the real
spirits of concerts and by 16-years old-web warriors who
wants to destroy everything, what is new I cant call a
strong Black Metal Scene. The funny fact .. They can post
some garbage the whole day long and comment songs and
pictures with their comments. It's funny to read it, because
I know that I will never hear to them, when i want to
"create myself" in music. It would be the biggest
mistake I could make. But I must say, being in a Band
without havin enough haters would be really boring, too. And
Remember! I don't make music for you in any kind of way.
It's only for me, the things and peoples I like.
What would you consider the hardest part about playing in an
Morbid: Sometimes It's hard to
pay everything on your own and don't have any help with
album layouts or different things. But I don't want to
change, if you ask me.
. What are your thoughts about the underground scene and the
German scene in particular?
Morbid: In Germany it is
really difficult for underground bands. I can't see a Black
Metal scene in the kind of way, it should be. They don't
want to destroy the humanity for example. They destroy the
"own race" (for example underground bands, fans)
and that´s not the truth, I think ....
- Well, that would be all for the moment...thanks very much
for your time. If you have anything to add in the end to
conclude this interview.
Thank you, too! Yes, I have something to add. Askan, the
singer of the Pagan Metal Band GERNOTSHAGEN sang the guest
vocals on our Song “Declaration Of Life” and we are
really proud of that because GERNOTSHAGEN is one of my
favourite bands. Check them out !
