- Vocal/bass )
is what I call the revival of the old 80´s death
metal, strongly influnced by bands suchs as OBITUARY, ASPHYX;
BENEDICTION, this is ABYSSUS from Greece, they keep the
flame of the glorious death metal era alive! A must!
Hails Kostas, you are the only founder member of the band,
but I assume you have reached a solid and complete line up
now? Tell us about this.
Abyssus is the band, the dream if you like, that i was
thinking about for years after the split-up of my first band
Necrosis. Many changes on the line-up occurred but
everything happens for a reason and is my belief that at
this moment we have a really great and solid line-up!
You have already played on a previous death metal band
called NECROSIS, could you remind us a little aspect about
this period and how so you decided to form your own band?
happened many years ago... we were high school students,
passionate for heavy metal! We were waiting the saturday to
come to go on the studio and play our new riffs and compose.
Immature stuff but very good even for nowadays... i have in
mind to re-record the old shits with the guys! You should
notice that they are still playing in great bands! Vaggelis
(drums) plays to Necrovorous, Resurgency, Sacral Rage,
Overcast and many more and Harris (guitars) has his own
great band, Vacantfield. Hope to play again with the lads!
Since your inception in 2011, you have released an
and a couple of splits, and are currently planning to
release another one. Could you tell us a bit more about the
bands whom you shared these releases?
first split release is "No Life In The Coffin"
with legendary Nocturnal Vomit! We are talking about one of
the greatest death metal bands worldwide. Their debut album
"Cursed Relics" is an incantation of blasphemy!
They wanted to make a split together and it would be a no
sense decision to deny their kind offer! They are great guys
and i think that this is a perfect release for any listener
who wants furious old school death metal on its purest form!
Soon another split -tape with crust/punk band SLAKTGRAV will
be available, early in the 2014! it will be a fist in the
face! And finally these days, is about to be released our
split-cd with MORBIDER, one of the most underrated bands in
the death metal scene! "From The Abyss Raised The
Morbid..." is entitled. Total Death Metal Holocaust!
Your sound is extremely focused on the old school vein. I
can notice strong remembrances to OBITUARY, BENEDICTION,
ASPHYX. In your opinion, how much did the death metal scene
change compared to the late '80-s/early '90-s?
i didn't really know what was happening back then, because i
was very young... For sure would be an amazing period. Many
bands, many great releases, may live shows! Death metal was
everywhere, it was mainstream! Some bands split-up, other
changed their style, media and labels didn't had the same
interesting as first and the death metal became an
underground music and for few. I am talking for old school
death metal because through the years brutal death metal and
gore/grind bands make their appearance and gained their
audience. The last years there is a revival, a new wave
let's say, for old-school material and i am really happy i
am in it!
How would you describe ABYSSUS as a whole?
is a band playing music to have a good time and enjoy every
moment. We play music as we want to listen it as fans, full
of passion and love. When these things will fade, Abyssus
will step aside...
6. Do you have serious opportunities for live shows in
Athens? What are the most memorable shows that you played?
yes, we have played many live shows the previous year but
now we have a very difficult schedule due to the recordings.
If there is a live show i have to choose, for me is
memorable the live show we've played for greek death/grind
scene fest at Salonica City and the Brutality Over Sanity
Fest where we have been an opening act for DEFEATED SANITY.
Pick a song from your repertoire, that you feel to be the
most interesting lyrically, musically or having a good story
about it and tell me about it.
of my songs are talking for social problems, oppression and
war, although these are not common death metal lyrics. From
the songs which are available to be listened i would choose
"Summon The Dead". We have been offered so much on
planet and we exploit and destroy, a foolish way,
almost everything. The end is near and will be cruel...
8. What music format do you prefer the most; vinyl, CD, or
cassettes? Do you think it is really good to release one
album in these three mentioned formats?
the most easy used, you can play it on your computer even
when you work. I really like bands releasing their stuff on
vinyl and tapes! i really appreciate it! i think that the
last years many people return to those cult formats and for
me it is totally respected and cool!
What are some of your interests, occupations and hobbies
outside of composing sick
the only thing i used to do except from heavy metal is
watching football and playing football manager! i was a semi-professional
footballer but i had a bad knee injury so i had to stop it,
but that forced me to give all my passion to metal!
OK, please define death metal with your own words, and if
death metal was a beer, which one would it be?
Heavy Metal itself, Death metal is a way of life and a
shelter to escape the daily routine and problems! many
feelings truly delivered through passion and fury! If Death
metal was a beer? i would choose
the french (or belgian?) one
called "du demon"! 12% alcohol!! pure hell
on your tankard!!
